5 clever ideas for unused rooms
Do you have a room in the house that you just look at, wondering what you could do with the space? You’re not alone. Whether it’s a full room or an empty space, there are plenty of ways that you can make this area useful to you and your family.
We’ve put together five of our favourite uses for that spare room.
Library and work space
A joint library and work or study space is a great use for a spare room, particularly for those book lovers or if you work from home. Having a dedicated office or study space allows for you to be more productive and motivated, while the library space gives you somewhere to escape and relax with a coffee and a good book.
The key to a good library and work space is organisation and comfort. Take the time to install built-in bookshelves, or find bookshelves that match the aesthetic of your home, while also creating a calming space to work. Organising your books by colour is a great way to bring a pop of colour to a white room. Add a comfy armchair, a quality office chair that supports your back, and an office desk you love, and you’ll have a space you won’t want to leave.
Butler’s pantry
Visitors can often pop by at the worst possible time, and if your kitchen is always cluttered or the last place to be cleaned, having a butler’s pantry built in may be a great way to use up that empty space. If you love cooking, a well-designed butler’s pantry will allow you to keep your bench-cluttering appliances, cookbook collection and cooking equipment out of sight, while your main kitchen area stays clean and tidy.
If you love those images of a sparkling clean and tidy kitchen, you’ll love having a butler’s pantry.
Designated storage room
Whether you like to stock up on multiples of your favourite grocery products when they are on special, or need somewhere to hide the grandkids’ Christmas presents, turning an unused space or room into a designated storage area can be a great idea. Building a cupboard in a hallway space, or fitting out a room with proper shelving is a good idea – and it doesn’t just have to be used to store food. For those who run businesses from home, having somewhere safe to store your old paperwork or your product is essential, while for others, it can be a great way to store those items you aren’t quite yet ready to dispose of.
Games room
Who doesn’t love a games room? Whether you prefer the old style of games room with a pool or billiards table, a pinball machine and a bar, a card table, or a more modern video game room, these rooms are a great way to entertain your family and friends, creating memories, all without having to leave the house. Another option is to buy a projector and set up a dark, cosy media room with comfy seats and blackout curtains so you can watch movies in complete comfort.
Pet station
Pet care areas are growing in popularity, and they give you a space to wash your dog and store all their associated items without having to mess up the bathroom or laundry, or have them roll in the dirt after a bath. The best place for a pet care station is beside a door leading to the outdoor area, whether this simply be an enclosed and organised space under the patio or a separate space in your garage. If you have an area for a mud room, this is the perfect place for multi-tasking (after all, it’s not just the pets who track dirt and mud into the house!)
Because you’ll be installing an extra tub or wash area, it is best to locate your pet station near an already existing drain to cut down on costs where possible.
