6 fabulous kitchen trends to discover this winter
Trends are a wonderful source of inspiration if you’re looking to try something new for the interior of your home. They can either motivate you to change a little, or a lot – depending on your appetite for some reno work.
And speaking of appetite, we wanted to have a closer look at some of the best kitchen design trends that we are seeing popping up everywhere at the moment. As the heart of the home, it’s a place you spend a lot of time, so why not consider a freshen up?
What’s in vogue right now?
Monochrome, minimal, ultramodern – those kitchens have adorned the pages of designer magazines for a while now. Which is why it’s delightful to see that there are far more options for those of us who would like to inject a little more colour and personality into our kitchen space.
What’s cool is that almost anything goes. You can mix and match elements to achieve a unique look, but one that still has purpose and style.
6 kitchen trends we’re loving this winter
1. More colour for cabinetry. Done in the right way, it can offer a spectacular focal point and create a certain kind of ambience that is hard to achieve with white. And there’s bonus points for incorporating a contrast between two bold colours.
2. Wood flooring (nb. you can go faux as well). This is great because it is just something that will never date, it’s practical (so easy to clean) and adds natural texture to a space.
3. Layered lighting. The kitchen is one room in the home where the right kind of lighting is critical, and while a lot of lighting has been hidden and paired back in recent years, it’s now allowed to come back into the limelight (excuse the pun). Think pendant lights that are features of the space, but also work for being on task, and creating an extension of the living room.
4. Out with the new and in with the old. It’s time to ditch the ‘showhome’ look, because kitchens can be stylish but warm and welcoming too. How to achieve this? By mixing in key vintage and antique pieces to provide unique character and personality.
5. Natural is nice. Incorporating natural elements provides you with another feature that will ensure longevity for your kitchen design. Using materials such as marble, granite and unpainted wooden cabinets allow for texture and interest, without dominating the space overall.
6. Open shelving for the win. For those who prefer a minimalist look, open shelving may drive you a little crazy. But we’re not saying everything has to be on display. Just one or two floating shelves offer a space to curate a collection of sorts – handmade pottery mugs, a pot plant or two, and a couple of favourite cook books. Think ‘living room’, but in the kitchen.
