6 things to do in Neutral Bay this winter
This winter got off to a chilly start and an early one but we are all starting to acclimatise to the frostier temperatures.
Ocean swims might be off the menu for the time being, but the good news is that Neutral Bay is one piece of Sydney that never shuts down. There are always things to do in this part of town, and this winter 2023 is no exception. In fact, it’s being reported that Sydney is springing back to life after the long months of the pandemic, with Sydney’s night time economy up to nearly 97% of pre-pandemic numbers.
Here are just a few of the fantastic activities, events and venues you can enjoy in Neutral Bay this winter.
Winter in Sydney 2023
– The Orpheum: The Orpheum, or the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, to grant it its full title, is an excellent palace to spend a winter’s evening. As always, they have a host of exciting events and premieres coming up this winter. A Live Theatre performance of Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge can be seen from July 13th, and special showings of the much-hyped but very different films Barbie and Oppenheimer start from July 20th. A screening of David Bowie’s last ever show is scheduled for July 31st.
– The Oaks: There’s always something to do at the Oaks, even if it’s to sit down and enjoy a few brews with friends. There is trivia night on Tuesdays and acoustic sessions Fridays and Saturday nights, as well as weekly beer tasting and PlayStation night. It’s also an excellent place for a hot winter lunch or dinner. If you haven’t already, now is the time to check out this Neutral Bay institution to see what all the fuss is about.
– Traffic Jam Galleries: Art lovers shouldn’t go past a winter visit to Traffic Jam Galleries on Military Road. In July, there will be a pop-up exhibition by artist Elena Bijelic called Pink Slip. In her words, “The colour pink has become a symbol of awareness and activism, representing a spectrum of important causes… the evocative use of pink invites the audience to delve into some of the most pressing and challenging topics of our time.” Head to Traffic Jam Galleries to see Bijelic’s stunning work.
– Go out to eat: there are so many perfect places for a warm winter meal in Neutral Bay that they are hard to list. We did give it a go, though, so make sure to check out our previous blog on cosy winter restaurants in and around Neutral Bay for some winter dining ideas.
– Bastille Festival Sydney: July is the month for all things French. If you didn’t make it to the Bastille Festival, book a French-themed cooking class and learn how to create three courses of incroyable cuisine. Held at Class Bento, this evening class is hosted by a French-trained chef and is suitable for beginners.
– Get out in nature: It may be cold, but a walk around Cremorne Point could be just the thing to get the blood flowing on a bright winter’s day. Enjoy the winter sun on the harbour and the many old heritage-listed mansions. If you’re really lucky, you might even spot a whale in the harbour at this time of year. And this is only one of many amazing walks you can enjoy in and around Neutral Bay. Make sure to check out our earlier post for some of the best walks in and around the neighbourhood.
