7 gorgeous home trends for a Sydney winter
The days of pared-back, plain white interiors are drawing to a close, and have been replaced by luxury, bold colour, beautiful patterns and more functional homes. This week, we’re sharing 7 key interior trends to get you inspired for the cosy winter days and nights ahead.
Flowers and greenery
Indoor plants look set to stay, but we’re also seeing a lot of floral, the bolder the better. The ‘grand millennial trend’ has something to do with this – it’s been described as almost anti-trend, a return to the flowery prints, frilly lamps and multi-coloured cushions of the Eighties, which were swept aside so decisively by warehouse minimalism in the nineties. After the last two years, we all need a bit of comfort, so go wild with floral fabrics and as much colour as you can handle.
We love the leafy Marimekko prints, available here in Sydney at The Modern, which feature botanical prints, animals and lots of colour. And don’t forget to add a vase of fresh winter flowers – preferably in a bright vintage vase.
Relaxed, natural materials
Velvet is out, apparently, but it’s been replaced by rough-textured natural fabrics for bed linen, curtains and furniture covers. Bed Tonic has some wonderful flax linen blankets in shades of chestnut, rose pink and emerald green that will make curling up on the couch a tempting prospect.
Bright, mismatched kitchenware and ceramics
Kitchenware is looking rustic and colourful – think beautiful clay mugs and bowls, wooden cooking utensils, coloured glass for vases and jugs and the odd vintage item thrown in. Again, it’s about creating a relaxed, homely feeling rather than having everything match or look perfect. And check out our recent post on creating an inspiring, organised kitchen.
Another side effect of being at home more is that we’ve been paying more attention to what’s around us. As well as artwork and ornaments, we’re choosing beautiful functional objects, such as teapots, candles and bowls, that both look good and serve a purpose.
Earthy colours
Chocolate brown is back, along with all shades of rich red and green. Also back are dark leathers and thick textured rugs.
Flexible, dual purpose furniture
We’ve had to make our rooms more flexible, doubling as work spaces and even classrooms. As a result, room dividers and adaptable furniture, such as extendable tables and folding chairs, have all become more popular.
Vintage and recycled materials
Looking back to less stressful, pre-pandemic time has seen an increased interest in vintage and recycled materials. Patchwork quilts and crafts are also growing in popularity, as people look for mindful ways to be creative at home.
Wellness at home
Whether it’s squeezing an infra-red sauna into a corner of your living room or just adding some extra fluffy towels, bath oil and candles to your bathroom to create a home spa, wellness is also huge this winter, understandably. Meditation corners, with a candle, a pink Himalayan salt lamp and a few meaningful objects, are becoming increasingly common as people find new, home-based ways to cope with stress. And home gyms are on the up, from a yoga mat to a full weight set, as more of us zoom into our favourite exercise classes or download videos. At this rate, it’s going to be hard to get us out again after the winter!
