7 ways to use your apartment walls
Living in an apartment with limited space? You need to use your walls to maximise your space. Here are 7 creative ways to get your walls working.
Move your task lighting off surfaces
Instead of table lamps that take up valuable space, why not use wall lighting instead? This can be particularly useful for areas such as above a work desk, next to your bed or over tables.
You can also add more light in the kitchen by using LED strip lighting above the kitchen bench or cooktop.
Add some gym gear
Exercise equipment can take up a lot of space in a small apartment. But if you have a solid wall, think about exercise equipment that can be wall-mounted and folds away when not in use, from chin-up bars to punching bags.
Cyclists may wish to install a bike rack on a wall to securely store your bike when not in use. Other equipment that you can hang on walls for easy access includes surfboards and tennis rackets.
Folding furniture
These days, there are plenty of functional furniture pieces that you can attach to the wall such as folding drop-leaf tables. Use these to create a dining space or a convenient work area for your computer or laptop, and fold them away when not in use. IKEA’s Norberg table is an inexpensive item that is easy to install and handy for kids’ bedrooms or a small home office space.
A great piece of artwork
Use the wall space in your apartment to showcase a single, large piece of artwork. This can be more eye-catching than a collection of smaller pieces.
You could source a great painting from an Australian artist or, if your budget is limited, go for a print instead. For inspiration, keep an eye out for the Affordable Art Fair in Sydney that happens around June each year. Or, to add warmth and cosiness to a living area or bedroom, you can hang a rug or piece of fabric instead.
Some ideas for kids
For kid’s rooms, consider painting one of the walls with blackboard paint. This is something that you could easily do yourself and gives younger kids a blank canvas that they can use again and again.
Another popular idea right now is laser strip lighting, which lets kids change the lighting depending on their mood.
And to encourage reading, why not install some library-type shelving on one of the walls in their room with books facing out? Change the books around when you remember so they can rediscover old favourites or try something new.
Add some greenery with wall-mounted planters
If plants are more your passion, consider a wall-mounted planter that you can use to create a plant wall. Growing Well in Sydney produces vertical planters that will help you make the most of a balcony wall and leave space for seating.
Add some stylish open shelving
You can use wall shelving in a whole range of creative ways. For example, consider a range of small shelves around a central print, or some sturdy open shelving above your kitchen benches for food storage and other homewares. Glass jars of dried goods look great alongside vases, ceramics and paintings – mix and match until you have something you’re happy with.
