What’s on in Neutral Bay this January
It’s a new year and summer is well underway, so what is there to do in and around Neutral Bay this January?
As always, there is so much to do between the Harbour Bridge and The Spit, so here are some ideas for activities in Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman this January.
Out and about
- Get out for a walk: January is an ideal time to slip, slop, slap and get out for a walk. Neutral Bay is packed with stunning walks, including Cremorne Point walk, which takes you past stunning colonial mansions and gorgeous views of the harbour, and Balmoral Beach walk, a five kilomentre stretch from Taronga Zoo to the cool waters of Balmoral Beach. There are also Lower Spofforth Walk Reserve, Kurraba Reserve and North Arm Track in Middle Cove, all of which offer beautiful bushland and perfect harbour views.
- Swimming: Along with a dip in the ocean at Balmoral Beach, if you head to Cremorne Point, you can swim at the Maccallum Seawater Pool. A true hidden gem, this rockpool was built by locals in the 1920s as a safe spot for swimming. The pool is packed with heritage charm and is an ideal spot for a casual swim on a hot summer day.
- Taronga Zoo: Neutral Bay is privileged to have one of the world’s best zoos right on the doorstep. Taronga Zoo’s brand new immersive Australian habitat, Nura Diya Australia and nguwing nura – Nocturnal Country, have opened recently, so if you haven’t been to Taronga for a while, expect a brand new experience. An annual pass is a great investment if you have kids and live locally because you can visit as often as you like, for a couple of hours at a time.
Eat and drink
- The Oaks: There’s always something happening at The Oaks. Neutral Bay’s favourite hotel with its famous 80-year-old oak tree is always an easy gathering place, whether it’s PlayStation night, acoustic nights on Friday and Saturday or trivia. Check the website for the beer of the month as well.
- SoCal: Enjoy a taste of Southern California right in the heart of Neutral Bay at SoCal. Bringing a taste of West Coast America to Sydney, SoCal also always hosts events, including Taco Tuesday and Bottomless Fiesta Lunches. Now is an excellent time to get the crew together for amazing food and a few margaritas on a summer’s day.
- Jugemu and Shimbashi: For the best Japanese food in Sydney and a unique dining experience, you can’t go past the dual restaurant, Jugemu and Shimbashi. Two restaurants on one premise complete with split decor, menus and entrances, you can still order from Jugemu, which specialises in teppanyaki (hot plate grilling) or Shimbashi, specialising in handmade soba noodles, whichever entrance you come through.
Entertainment
- Sunset Cinema: If there’s one experience Aussies always love in the summer, it’s an outdoor cinema. The Sunset Cinema at North Sydney Oval operates all the way through till early March. See all the latest releases or go along to check out the 90s classic, 10 Things I Hate About You. Food and drinks are available, or you can bring along your own picnic meal.
- The Orpheum: If you prefer your cinema indoors, there is always the Hayden Orpheum. Neutral Bay’s drawcard cinema always has special events coming, as well as all the latest releases. This January events include a Big Shark screening, a Frozen singalong, and a Q&A preview of Force of Nature – The Dry 2, featuring Eric Bana and author Jane Harper live on stage.
Activities
- North Sydney Community Centre: There’s always something to do at the North Sydney Community Centre. From photography and basket weaving to Spanish, Yoga and their weekly choir, the community centre offers around 100 classes and workshops every term. There’s bound to be something for you, so check them out today.
- Cooking classes: Why not use January to enhance your cooking skills? Classes at the Sydney Cooking School are now back after the Christmas break, so you can try your hand at a Mexican and Margaritas class, be introduced to classic French cuisine with the Three Course Blue Menu class or take the kids along for a kid’s cooking class.
- Crockd Studio: If cooking is not your thing, try your hand at pottery at Crockd Studio.
The friendly team at Crockd run one-off classes for kids and adults or full courses for the more dedicated. From Summer Clay Camp for the kids to mug-making classes to clay and bottomless margaritas, there’s something for everyone at Crockd.
