Enjoy Christmas drinks at these Neutral Bay gems
Christmas is on the way, and you know what that means – time for some festive spirit.
Luckily for those who live in and around Neutral Bay on Sydney’s lower north shore, there are plenty of places to go out for a friendly drink this festive season.
Here are some of the best old and new favourites in and around Neutral Bay to enjoy a cocktail or two.
The Oaks
Anyone who has enjoyed living in Neutral Bay for any period of time will know that the Oaks has to be on the top of the list for a pre-Christmas catch-up.
Established in 1855, the Oaks is a Neutral Bay institution, situated on a prime piece of Sydney real estate. A classic Sydney pub, the beer garden is shaded by an 84-year-old oak tree that was a gift to the then-owners as a sapling when they bought the venue in 1938.
With a popular trivia night and open mic night, and a wonderful atmosphere year round, the Oaks will be thriving for many years to come.
SoCal
Tucked just back from Military Road, SoCal is Neutral Bay’s primary destination for tacos and margaritas. Owners Ben and Hamish set out to bring a slice of Southern California to Neutral Bay and have succeeded beautifully with their selection of Southern California-inspired food and drink.
SoCal even does special Christmas parties of all kinds on the open-air rooftop terrace & dining area. This spot always books out fast so make sure you plan ahead.
The Pickled Possum
Another Neutral Bay institution is The Pickled Possum.
This dive bar and late-night karaoke joint has been known as a rite of passage for North Shore residents for generations and is famous for its quirky staff and decor. From the beer-filled eskys behind the bar to the milk crate-supported stage, the Pickled Possum is a unique experience.
Named for the possums that used to hang over the door frame, it opened in 1981 but was nearly lost to Sydneysiders after spending many months in hibernation. Luckily, new ownership stepped in in 2021, and the pub is once again back for late-night shenanigans.
Honey Rider Brewery
Honey Rider Brewery is one of the smallest breweries in Sydney, with its brewing facilities squeezed in behind its bar.
Established in 2011, the bar focuses on craft beers but still doesn’t lack exciting cocktails for the more adventurous.
You can book a party for more than eight guests at Honey Rider Brewery or just come along for some chill Christmas brews. Run a bar tab, a cash bar, or a combination of both, the choice is up to you.
Hideout Bar
If Christmas cocktails sound like your speed, you can’t go past the Hideout Bar in Grosvenor Lane.
Hideout Bar is warm and friendly, and they pride themselves on their sustainability and work hard to source all their menu items locally. Expect all your favourite cocktails, many with a special Aussie twist. And if mixed beverages aren’t to your taste, they also have a wide selection of beer, ciders, wines and non-alcoholic drinks.
Baal Bar and Cafe
Along with great food, Baal Bar and Cafe on Grosvenor Street just off Military Road, specialises in beer, gin, and cocktails.
The friendly little bar is a newbie that is starting to gain traction among locals. It is open late on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and you can drop in for breakfast the next morning.
