Spare beds and storage for your guests
With the holidays approaching too quickly, now’s the perfect time to consider how you can make guests feel comfortable in your home. Today we’re sharing several ideas for spare beds and storage for guests. If your Neutral Bay home has minimal space, here’s how to have maximum impact – and you don’t need a dedicated guest room, either.
5 comfortable guest bed options
Being Sydney real estate experts, we’re fully aware that many people don’t have permanent spare rooms. This just isn’t practical in the current market, so we want to give you several comfortable guest bed options and ideas for when you have minimal space.
1. Sofa beds
Let’s start with the classics: sofa beds and futons. IKEA has a vast selection of affordable sofa bed options, starting at under $200. A particular favourite is the LYCKSELE LÖVÅS two-seater sofa bed. It looks like a comfy couch, but pull the cover off and you have a sofa bed in about five seconds. The good news is a sofa bed can easily fit into your current home. Pop it in your office, living room or playroom.
2. Rollaway beds
Transform your Neutral Bay home into a hotel with a rollaway bed. The Comfort Shop is an Australian-owned business with a showroom conveniently located in Crows Nest. Visit to check out their guest folding bed and their cube bed. You have to see it to believe it because the bed actually folds into a cube!
3. Air beds
An oldie but a goodie, head to Anaconda to shop their range of comfortable air mattresses. While this is better for the younger generation (we know the struggle to get out of an air mattress after a certain age), all you need is some floor space for an air bed so it’s a great alternative for smaller apartments.
4. Wall beds
Do wall beds (also known as Murphy beds) make anyone else think of yesteryear American sitcoms? They’ve had a makeover since then and now you can get stylish horizontal and vertical wall bed options in multiple sizes. Some of the beds are built into existing furniture or all you need is space for a cupboard. Here are some Australian companies offering wall beds:
5. Cardboard bed
Yes, you read that correctly. Yona is an Australian-based company offering a sustainable cardboard bed. You simply pull the cardboard out of the box, pop a mattress on top and sleep soundly. It’s available in multiple sizes and colours. While this means you’ll need space to store a mattress too, the cardboard stores in the box and takes up minimal space (similar to a Christmas tree box).
3 ways to make guests feel comfortable
Now you have the bed sorted, here are four simple ways to prep your home so guests instantly feel comfortable and welcome.
- Choose good bedding. Nothing quite says “luxurious hotel” like crisp white high thread-count sheets and a fluffy doona. They’ll forget they’re on an air mattress!
- Don’t forget a side table. No matter the bed you choose, ensure you pair it with some type of side table for maximum comfort. Bonus points if you include a lamp and your favourite book.
- Stock the kitchen. Channel a B&B and stock up on breakfast and lunch necessities. You might even like to prep and freeze easy meals like lasagne so you can also relax when your guests arrive.
With these tools at your disposal, setting up your Neutral Bay home for houseguests has never been easier.
